Lynn's House

34" x 34"

Just finished this commission for my friend Lynn and I think it turned out great. It's just the type of scene I would have chosen to paint. What is it about a bungalow that makes it feel so welcoming and comfortable?

First Day of Summer

40" x 46"

Twelve of my paintings will be on display at the Hoover Library, downstairs gallery, through June 2, if you'd like to see my latest work. First day of Summer was inspired by a scene on the curve where 29th Street South meets Rhodes Circle.

I've painted this scene before but I did it again as a night view. It's large, 40" x 46"

McAdory Building

(36" x 40")

Another painting from photos I took one Sunday afternoon last September. I love the colors in this building. I know I haven't posted in a while; it's not that I haven't been painting it's just that some were commissions and the others aren't completely done yet. Sometimes paintings happen easily, sometimes they have to sit around for a while until I can see what it is they need to be finished. Hope to be posting more often now, thanks for looking.

Sunday Afternoon Downtown

36"x36" Famous

I wanted to paint Pete's Famous Hot Dogs because it's such a Birmingham icon and because I love neon signs. As luck would have it there was a bright red car parked in front on this afternoon and the sign was turned on.

36"x36" Sidewalk Cafe

This is the sidewalk by Roly Poly Sandwiches on southside, behind Zydeco. I loved all the shades of green in the chairs.

30"x30" Fine Dining

The afternoon sunlight striking the entrance to Cafe Dupont on 20th Street.

Late September

36" x 48"

There aren't many old farmhouses left in the country, much less ones in good repair like this one. This is on Hwy 160 in Blount County.

Saturday, October 4th is the Bluff Park Art Show in Hoover from 9-5. Looks like it's going to be a beautiful weekend, hope to see you there.

The Face Over the Door, and Artwalk

40"x 30"

I've painted this before, only a lot smaller and I didn't capture the scowl on the face which is what fascinates me so about this figure. I also love the beautiful colored glass in the window. I do not know who this is or why she is so mad. This is the doorway of Birmingham Realty on First Avenue North.

Artwalk in downtown Birmingham is this weekend, Friday night 6-10, and Saturday noon to six. It's always a lot of fun. Check out the website for details. I'll be in Lindsay Office Furnishings on First Avenue North.

The Road To Town

30" x 36"
It's hard to find places in Birmingham where there's a good view of the city - all you see is trees. I usually have to find these places in the Winter when I can see, then paint them leaving as though it was summer, leaving out some of the foliage. This is the intersection of 11th place and 16th Avenue. This painting will be at the Hoover library in an exhibit of work by artists in the Bluff Park Art Show. The exhibit will be hung on Monday, August 4th, and continue through the month of August. The Art Show will be October 4th.

I love these little snow cone places with their bright umbrellas. This one is on the highway in Morris, Alabama.

Early One Morning

24" x 30" (sold)
It was a beautiful morning in Homewood and the light and shadows were falling just right on this street.

Ranch House in Crestwood

This is one of the commissions I recently finished. It was for a young family that was moving from Birmingham and wanted to always remember their first house.

Candyland

14" x 16"
I've been working on commissions and haven't anything I could post for a while. Here's a small one I actually did last year but I recently went back and made some changes. I keep trying to capture the look of lights at night and this one comes close to what I envision. A lot of fun to work on.

The Red Farmhouse

24" x 30"

I wanted to paint this house because of all the red color. I think that even though the house fills up most of the picture space, you can still feel the open fields around it.

Morning on Twelfth Street

24"x30"
At least I think it was twelfth street south. It was 8:00 in the morning.

Twilight

24"x30"
I haven't been able to spend much time at the easel lately but I plan to be back at it next week and posting more often. This is the last new painting I have until I get back to work. I love that time of day when it's almost, but not quite dark, and the lights start to come on.

On The Road

Diptych 30"x48" Click on image for larger view. (sold)

I'll be in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama next weekend, March 13,14,and 15th for the Eastern Shore Art Center's annual outdoor show. I'll have a lot of new work I've done since my last show, including this diptych. This is my first time to do this show but I've heard great things about it. If you're down there, please come by and say hello.

House With a View

18" x 24"
One of the many local homes clinging to the side of the mountain. I loved curving street and the shadows falling across it.

18"x24"
Exploring the glow of a porch light and a pink sky.

Across the Road

18"x24"
Although this isn't an actual place, I feel like I've seen it before. There's such a feeling of space....and isolation in the country. This house looks like it may be abandoned, soon to be replaced by a doublewide.

The Face On the Wall

The Face on the Wall
12" x 12"
Something a little different, a detail from a building on First Avenue. I haven't quite captured the expression on the face as it should be more sinister.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Red Flowers

18" x 24"
I wanted to explore that golden color that the morning sometimes has, just after sunrise.

Commission

Shady Entrance
24" x 20"
This is one of the commissions I was working on for Christmas. A smaller piece that captures their favorite part of their house and the shadows cast by a huge oak in the front yard. This one went to Memphis, Tennessee.

Snowcones by the Interstate

24" x 30"
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to paint all the bright colors in these umbrellas. I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted anything. I've been busy getting ready for all the upcoming Fall shows. Artwalk in downtown Birmingham starts tomorrow, Friday Sept. 8, 5:00pm - 10pm, and Saturday noon -6:00. I'll be in Lindsay Office Furnishings, 1st Ave. North.

Sunday Afternoon

church-copy
30" x 24" (sold)
I have wanted to paint this church for a long time and last Sunday I happened to drive up from the back and I saw this view which I really like. I love the way the street is in deep shadow but the sun is hitting the building.

Title Building

Title Building
(sold)
I haven't painted many cityscapes but I've painted the Title Building twice because I love the terracotta color. I used a photo I took one Sunday as reference for this and when I took it to a show someone pointed out that the red car is going the wrong way on a one way street.

Northside

(sold)
I love this house on the corner because of it's great color and because it has this neat little porch on the side.

Late Afternoon

24" x 30" (sold)
In this I wanted to capture the low, golden light and long shadows of late afternoon.

County Road 1 Sunset

18" x 14" (sold)
Blount County 1 is a picture perfect country road.

High Side

24" x 30" (sold)
I saw these houses on a hill in Crestwood one day and I liked the angle of the view from the street and the steps leading down to the sidewalk.

Backyard

These old metal lawn chairs have such a graceful shape and I love the twists and turns of the trunks of a crepe myrtle.
