Sunday Afternoon Downtown

36"x36" Famous

I wanted to paint Pete's Famous Hot Dogs because it's such a Birmingham icon and because I love neon signs. As luck would have it there was a bright red car parked in front on this afternoon and the sign was turned on.

36"x36" Sidewalk Cafe

This is the sidewalk by Roly Poly Sandwiches on southside, behind Zydeco. I loved all the shades of green in the chairs.

30"x30" Fine Dining

The afternoon sunlight striking the entrance to Cafe Dupont on 20th Street.

Late September

36" x 48"

There aren't many old farmhouses left in the country, much less ones in good repair like this one. This is on Hwy 160 in Blount County.

Saturday, October 4th is the Bluff Park Art Show in Hoover from 9-5. Looks like it's going to be a beautiful weekend, hope to see you there.

The Face Over the Door, and Artwalk

40"x 30"

I've painted this before, only a lot smaller and I didn't capture the scowl on the face which is what fascinates me so about this figure. I also love the beautiful colored glass in the window. I do not know who this is or why she is so mad. This is the doorway of Birmingham Realty on First Avenue North.

Artwalk in downtown Birmingham is this weekend, Friday night 6-10, and Saturday noon to six. It's always a lot of fun. Check out the website for details. I'll be in Lindsay Office Furnishings on First Avenue North.

Under the Shade Tree

Four Seasons Antiques and Art in downtown Homewood is hosting a wine and cheese reception this Friday (August 22nd) for artists Carolyn McDonald and myself. Four Seasons is on the main street in Homewood (18th) next to Savage's bakery. We'll be there from 6:00pm to 8:00 so come by and say hello and see what's new at the gallery.

The Road To Town

30" x 36"
It's hard to find places in Birmingham where there's a good view of the city - all you see is trees. I usually have to find these places in the Winter when I can see, then paint them leaving as though it was summer, leaving out some of the foliage. This is the intersection of 11th place and 16th Avenue. This painting will be at the Hoover library in an exhibit of work by artists in the Bluff Park Art Show. The exhibit will be hung on Monday, August 4th, and continue through the month of August. The Art Show will be October 4th.

Open

24" x 30" (sold)
I love these little snow cone places with their bright umbrellas. This one is on the highway in Morris, Alabama.

Early One Morning

24" x 30" (sold)
It was a beautiful morning in Homewood and the light and shadows were falling just right on this street.

Ranch House in Crestwood

This is one of the commissions I recently finished. It was for a young family that was moving from Birmingham and wanted to always remember their first house.

Candyland

14" x 16"
I've been working on commissions and haven't anything I could post for a while. Here's a small one I actually did last year but I recently went back and made some changes. I keep trying to capture the look of lights at night and this one comes close to what I envision. A lot of fun to work on.

The Red Farmhouse

24" x 30"

I wanted to paint this house because of all the red color. I think that even though the house fills up most of the picture space, you can still feel the open fields around it.

Morning on Twelfth Street

24"x30"
At least I think it was twelfth street south. It was 8:00 in the morning.

Twilight

24"x30"
I haven't been able to spend much time at the easel lately but I plan to be back at it next week and posting more often. This is the last new painting I have until I get back to work. I love that time of day when it's almost, but not quite dark, and the lights start to come on.

On The Road

Diptych 30"x48" Click on image for larger view. (sold)

I'll be in beautiful Fairhope, Alabama next weekend, March 13,14,and 15th for the Eastern Shore Art Center's annual outdoor show. I'll have a lot of new work I've done since my last show, including this diptych. This is my first time to do this show but I've heard great things about it. If you're down there, please come by and say hello.

House With a View

18" x 24"
One of the many local homes clinging to the side of the mountain. I loved curving street and the shadows falling across it.

Pink Sky

18"x24"
Exploring the glow of a porch light and a pink sky.

Across the Road

18"x24"
Although this isn't an actual place, I feel like I've seen it before. There's such a feeling of space....and isolation in the country. This house looks like it may be abandoned, soon to be replaced by a doublewide.

The Face On the Wall

The Face on the Wall
12" x 12"
Something a little different, a detail from a building on First Avenue. I haven't quite captured the expression on the face as it should be more sinister.

Red Flowers

18" x 24"
I wanted to explore that golden color that the morning sometimes has, just after sunrise.
